Model's of Practice seminar - Notes

Accelerated Learning in Maths (ALiM) - Amanda

Quote from Alton Lee  "Accelerated achievement requires a whole system to function as a collaborative learning community..."

Collaboration is about ownership (as different from co-operation)

'Change is messy', if things are all going smoothly then maybe you are not changing anything.

Mentor rather than facilitator. (Facilitator - Mentor - Coach)

questions:

Is the Learning progressions Framework a useful guide for accelerating Maths achievement?

How do you take 'learning out to the rest of the school'?

Use of Video for PL - Phillipa

Teachers can stagnate in their PL if they don't have continued support.

Video - don't have to reply on memory, can go back again and again and like a sieve - find something new each time.

If you can change a teacher's belief and values, this will be a longer last change rather than just using a new strategy or tool. Relates to Amanda's seminar on facilitator/mentor - a mentor aims to change values and beliefs.

Method: filmed 8 videos over a month, multiple viewings, written reflections

Videoing lessons could possibly replace lesson observations - teacher video's themselves (maybe even 4 times before they share) , watches and reflects then can share with coach/mentor and discuss certain aspects (rather than whole thing)

Collaborative Inquiry - Sara

Compares 5 different collaborative models (including DuFour model, Timperley model)

Questions:
How do large groups of teachers (10-14) work effectively together?

Kaupapa Wananga - Susanne

Ako - living, learning, teaching
Aro - reflecting on your practice

2 Models of Inquiry - Doug

NZC cycle of inquiry cf. Timperley's spirals of inquiry

Collaborative Inquiries should be based around the same group of kids

"innovation floats on a sea of inquiry and curiosity is a driver for change"

Paeroa College model
1) individual interest
2) collaborative inquiry (spiral model)
3) individual inquiry (MOE model)

No whole school PD - time dedicated to own PL

Te Kotahitanga - too rigid, mainly focused on challenging perceptions of Maori achievement

Hattie's work is reductionist

Criticism of Inquiry in PPTA newsletter (Larry Dixon - p6)

Accelerate Literacy Learning (ALL) - Colleen

ALL - 15 week, intensive supplementary model

Parents are the first and most important teacher a student has.

Most communication between school and parent is one way.
