What Science of Learning?

 Professor Guy Claxton

There's no such thing as THE science of learning

The sciences of learning range much more broadly than teaching maths and science

Learning - transforms experience into lasting changes into competence, character and comprehension

"What do they to be able to do AND who do they want them to BE

Learning Scientists

Roger Schank

"learning is about failure and recover from failure"

"Learning happens when someone wants to learn, not when someone wants to teach"

"A properly designed school system needs to focus on cognitive abilities, not scholarly subjects... If we allow students to choose what areas of knowledge they would like to

There is no such thing as 'best practice': it depends on values

Desirable Outcomes of education: What is it that all our young people are likely to need to :

Know (lifeworthy eg chemical bonding vs anxiety and depression)

Do (literacies/expertise)

Be like (attitudes / habits)

Unpacking the AI Framework for Australian Schools

Implementing the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools can be complex, but Dan Ingvarson, a long-standing EdTech consultant and strategist, is joining us at AI for AussieEd to guide you through it. In collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong, Dan has developed a streamlined model to support Australian schools.
In this session, Dan will walk you through his quickstart guide and help you get started on formulating your school’s AI plan.
Some key takeaways:
Align with the Australian Framework for Gen AI.
Equip your staff with essential materials, workshops, and tools.
Focus on data privacy, security, and ethical AI.
Involve staff to ensure relevance and build capacity.
Pilot and refine your approach with actionable feedback.

Ubiquitousness Gen Al vs Traditional plagiarism

Select one of your current assessments and attempt to complete it using a GenAl tool. Document the process and the results. How successful was the Al in completing the task? What implications does this have for your assessment design?

Help staff understand that if students are motivated to most simple assessments are able to be created by Al.

Remove Al from the Assessment:

Lane 1 - Using current process: requires F2F authorship.

  1. In class pen and paper, could take from learning time to do assessments. (lane 1)
  2. External referee validation, proctoring, additional trust tools (lane 1) Update process to improve confidence in authorship. Lane 2

AI leading schools - NZARE webinar

 Hype vs pessimism

unlocking true potential

data protection

'focus on authenticity vs potential for learning'

Slowness of uptake

Use of Australian framework for Educators

LLM built on western/eurocentric knowledge

Indigienious knowledge is drowned out

NZ context is bi-cultural / multi cultural

data sovereignty

AI as the first draft!

A lot of ways you shouldn't use AI

Create own LLM (Sandbox approach)

How might AI change the skills we value should be developing for the future?

AI Literacy!!!!

AI removes personal voice - embrace who we are

Adaptive competence - the ability to adjust (eg use a Mac and a PC)

Knowing when and when NOT to use the tools (eg. cruise control on a boring road vs in town with busy roads)

Be curious

Is this going to enable to be more human (kind, caring, critical and creative thinkers)
