AS 1.1 Demonstrate understanding of the application of scientific investigative approaches

Experiment. Sea shell, acid, detergent measure height of foam

Bunny population simulation

Different types of investigations. Not just fair testing. Models, observing....

A range of scientific investigative approaches includes three different approaches from:

  • pattern seeking
  • exploring and observing
  • modelling
  • classifying and identifying
  • fair testing.

Science 1.3 Demonstrate understanding of how scientific ideas and processes develop and evolve

Features of science can be found within either or both Western Science and Pūtaiao. They may include:

  • making direct and indirect observations
  • interpreting patterns and interactions with the natural world
  • linking new evidence to existing models, theories and ideas
  • showing awareness of different knowledge systems and their contributions to scientific knowledge and development
  • the influence of social and cultural factors on science
  • the influence of the development and use of technology
  • responding to needs and opportunities
  • rigorously reviewing claims
  • using specific language, symbols, and conventions
  • being tentative by nature; the only certainty in science is when a claim is disproved
  • in Pūtaiao, an emphasis on:
    • a Māori world view
    • a place-based focus
    • the importance of values
    • connections to the land, environment and all living things.
  • the attributes of the people who carry out the science and Pūtaiao (such as curiosity, collaboration, competitiveness, creativity and critical thinking).

Science 1.4 Apply science thinking to scientific claims and how they are communicated
